Luckily so far they've been making the third velocity vector in the velocity field equal to zero, which makes all but the upper-left-hand part of the matrix go to zero as well. It's kind of cool though, the diagonal of the tensor matrix, if you sum it, is the strain rate on the fluid particle, and if you add up all of the off-diagonal components, it's the spin tensor, so you can find out by how much your fluid element is spinning. I don't actually know yet how that is relevant to anything, but it's an engineering class, so they always give you real-life examples. BUT actually, do you have a TI-89? Because with linear algebra you can simulanteously solve as many equations as you want, by making a row for each equation and a column for each variable, and then entering in the coefficient for each variable in the correct row and column, and then you can just type the matrix into your calculator, and then use either ref (row echelon form) or rref (reduced row echelon form) I can't remember, and it spits out a matrix with only a diagonal, all the rest of the terms are zero, so there is only one term for each variable, they are the eigenvalues that you're looking for. OH, guess what, Thalweg is taking ochem secretly in the mornings, it's pretty sweet, so she comes home and tells me things like how chemically your eyes see light and stuff like that.
